Illeana Gomez Flamenco

Illeana Gomez first encountered Spanish dance in her home town of Laredo, TX. Since then she has studied with various artists in Spain at Amor de Dios in Madrid as well as various artists in Seville including Juan Manuel Montoya “Farruquito,” Carmen Ledesma, Juana Amaya, and Andres Marin. In 2006 Illeana moved to Albuquerque to study at the Conservatory of Flamenco Arts under Joaquin Encinias. Under the mentorship of Eva Encinias, she was the first student in history to earn an MFA in Dance with a focus in flamenco. Illeana has worked in various companies including Yjastros: The American Flamenco Repertory Company, and Flamenco Vivo Carlota Santana, and Juan Siddi Flamenco Santa Fe, and has been on several national tours, performing in such prestigious theaters as the Joyce Theater in NY. She has shared the stage with such artists as Jesule de Utrera, Saray Muñoz, Auxi Fernandez, Silverio Heredia, Jose Mendez, and Carmen Ledesma to name a few. Most recently Illeana formed part of Theater Flamenco of San Francisco's 50th season featuring such artists as Juana la del Pipa, and Pastora Galvan. Currently, she resides in Austin, Texas where she teaches and is co-director of La Juerga Flamenco Ensemble. She has taught dance at the University of New Mexico, Institute for Spanish Arts, and Aspen Santa Fe Ballet. “Although I was born in Texas, so far from flamenco’s place of origin, it has always been a part of my life. I respect the tradition of flamenco, but I want to voice my own narrative, and tell my story as an American dancing Spanish dance.”

"Texas-born Ileana Gomez, with her electric presence and explosive energy, is the consistent magnet in this company." Review of Juan Siddi Flamenco by Dierdre Towers (Eye on Dance and the Arts)

Ileana Gomez danced her own “Soleá por Bulerias,” an intense
and gripping performance with sharp, stinging gestures. She seemed a
slender, witch-like creature whipping out multiple turns, driving
pointed arms in attack mode, and jumping into fast, driving foot
